The Shimano Talica Story: #1 CASTABILITY - A truly light weight spool for casting small livebaits such as Anchovies and Sardines is a must. So Shimano aggressively machine the spool to maximize weight savings while maintaining strength. We also created a way to minimize drag created by water between the spool and the frame. 'Chovies and 'Dines are very light, and traditionally, to cast these baits, good anglers would "bump" the spool during the cast to get the spool moving and avoid the bait from flying out, then suddenly getting jerked down by line not coming off of the spool and slapping hard on the surface of the water. We took this one step further in defining the ability of Talica to cast well to mean underhand to enhance bait persentation. Now that the chum line will not be unattainable even when casting underhand, imagine how much further overhand will get you.

#2 POWER - Cranking force is a hard thing to explain until you are handed a reel with the fish on the other end. The use of High Efficiency Gears in high and low speeds sets Talica apart from all reels currently offered in the market. The incredible power in low and in high is what makes Talica a joy to battle big fish with. No longer will you have to decide between power in low gear or speed in high gear. Talica is the best of both worlds and lets you save your energy for hoisting that cow up for a photo!

#3 DRAG - A smooth drag is very important and one that Shimano prides itself upon throughout the product line. Talica is no exception to this rule. However, being able to fish 3 or 4 line classes heavier than you would normally on a reel of its size makes Talica more fun to fish since you spend a lot less time fighting your tackle and more time fighting the fish. Even the smallest Talica, TAC8II, will fish 50# PowerPro with ease!

#4 COMPACT - When you first lay your eyes on a Talica it's intriguing. When you feel what it's capable of it's amazing! An incredible amount of testing for ergonomics went into the design process of this reel and the feel of it confirms this. (We went through over 5 different gearbox angles and shapes before we were happy with it!) Don't let Talica's small stature and lightweight fool you, this reel is a beast!

Talica 25 II drag failure in cold temperatures

I have 5 of these reels. They work great in warm summer temperatures and have landed bigeye greater than 200 lbs, yellowfins, mahi and a swordfish. Tried using them for offshore tilefish and drags stopped working when outside temperature went below freezing. Warm the reel up with a heater and the drag works fine. I would have thought this was a single reel phenomenon but had this happen on all 5 reels on a winter offshore trip for sea bass.
Seems to be a design problem occurring only when temperature goes below freezing.

As I age....I am trying to fish with lighter gear using stand up tackle. Normally I fish with 50W and 80W with the big stand up harness. I took this on a couple NE canyon trips and a couple BF tuna trips east of CC. Most people look at me like I am nuts. It looks like a toy compared to the traditional gear. I have this on the heaviest terex rod rated for 200#. The ability of this reel quite amazing. It is light and strong. Has about 45# of drag at max and 30 at strike. The drag is stella-like smooth and it has a very rugged feel to it, yet it is light and you can fight 100-200# fish with a light wrap-around type belt, huki or cushit. And you will whip the fish faster than an 80W with all the awkward harness contraptions. And not suffer any pain doing so. Frankly, I am replacing all my 50W gear with this setup. It holds plenty of HC braid with a top shot of mono and I think you can easily take a 250# tuna with this. On one trip we had a 154# big eye and a couple few YF to 100# . While seal monsters much above that will require heavier tackle but you will have a 100# yellowfin to the boat in no time and not get exhausted doing so. The power this can deliver will put a smile on your face. IMO It is an ideal light canyon set up where the fish are usually not going to exceed 300#. On my reel, I replaced the handle with a custom handel available online which is a little longer and more comfortable for big game. The feeling of mechanical advantage you get with this light set up is simply remarkable. I have only used it for one season but it is holding up great. I plan to get a few more of these. This is the way to go if you light stand up fishing with fish to 250# or so.

I have the 12 matched with a shimano jigging rod and it is SICK. We put it on the bottom while sailfishing and nothing has proven to big for it yet. From 12 lb muttons to 35lb aj's its built like a tank.

This reel is bad to the bone. excellent gear ratio, very smooth with tons of torque and power, super strong and smooth drag. It is my new favorite conventional reel by far!
